Specialty Flash-Butt Welding

Crane Rail Welding

Holland has been providing electric flash-butt crane rail welding services since the mid 1980's. This has become the standard method of joining sections of crane rail to make continuous runways that support both overhead cranes, gantry, and ground-based container cranes. The strong, continuous welded rail produced is free of foreign material and mechanical joints, two contributing factors to uneven wear and premature failure. Our high-production method of welding crane rail provides a running surface for cranes that minimizes wheel and wheel-bearing maintenance while maximizing ride quality for both the crane operator and valuable lading.

Our flash-butt welding equipment is capable of working quickly and efficiently in high-elevation, limited-access applications.  With the ability to produce welds in a fraction of the time of other welding methods, we offer a high-quality welding service.  The value of flash-butt welding is easily identified in the initial speedy cost of installation, the reassurance that costly derailments due to failed joints will be avoided, and greatly reduced maintenance costs.

  • Holland’s K 355 G Welder heads are specially made to accommodate the wide shape of crane rail and have the capability of welding 60-175 pound rail.
  • Our standard welder heads can accommodate any size of T-shaped rail
  • Tooling - Shear dies come along with the welder, so that multiple sizes of crane rail can be welded in one setting to make the most of your project’s time.
  • We've had years of experience providing crane rail flash-butt welding services to businesses such as steel mills, paper mills, ports, shipyards, stadiums, industrial facilities, and more!
  • Holland also offers thermite welding as a viable option for harder-to-reach workspaces.

Transit Welding

Flash-butt welding rail in-track on transit properties presents unique challenges. Perhaps the greatest challenges to overcome are occupancy of mainlines that run only a few, if any, non-revenue hours per day and clearance restrictions between third rail and running rail and at station platforms. Holland meets these challenges with high-production, hi-rail mobile, all-terrain, and platform-based equipment that is able to weld in-track without disturbing third rail, catenary, or tunnel clearance.

The use of electric flash-butt welds in rapid transit rail operations offers many of the same benefits enjoyed by freight railroads. High-quality flash-butt welds provide a smoother ride, durability, and the lowest lifetime cost. Our welding technology aimed at the transit market can install flash-butt welds, including closure welds, within the clearance of most third rail electrified systems.

As a designer and manufacturer of our own flash-butt welding equipment, we have the ability to create custom solutions for individual transits to meet their unique characteristics and clearance requirements.
